I have, fairly recently, started dabbling in the world of video game streaming and putting video content to YouTube. It’s not any sort of heady ambition to become some kind of interweb superstar, it’s just because it’s fun to do. There are links in the left-hand bar, if you’re even vaguely interested.
I do, however, tend to find myself talking myself out of it. I am an absolutely legend at coming up with excuses as to why I shouldn’t do it. The excuses can be based on anything – the time, something else that needs doing, whether a delivery might be due. There are a lot of reasons. It’s not so bad for the streaming, but if you’re recording anything there’s nothing worse than a door-to-door salesman turning up midway through and you end up having to do awkward edits.
Because that has happened.
But some days I truly am cursed.
A few weeks ago, I had pretty much a free day. There’s wasn’t anything urgent or pressing that needed to be done. I didn’t have to work. I planned to get up early and do a bit of streaming or recording (or both, because one can be the other). And that turned out to be the day that noisy next door was having their cavity wall insulation put in. So the entire day was occupied with the sound of loud drilling and the constant drone of the pump that puts the foamy stuff in the walls.
Which is not the best background noise for any sort of recorded entertainment.
And then today I was in a similar situation. I had a soup to make, and some washing to do. But other than that I was in a position where I could sit in front of the TV and talk to myself for several hours and upload it to the internet for maybe one or two people to watch.
So, obviously, today was the day when our other neighbour was having new windows fitted. So the day has been filled with hammering, drilling, sawing and countless other industrial noises. Again, not great background noises.
I just made soup and did some washing instead.
I can’t think that either house needs anything else doing, but let’s see whether that’s still true on Sunday…
