May 26, 2019: Pika

Part of the fun of seeing Detective Pikachu was trying to work out which of the trailers has been added in place of the god awful Sonic The Hedgehog one which was probably in the mix somewhere before the makers actually went, “Hey, you know what? We have royally fucked up with this hedgehog… we’ll, erm, we’ll be back…”

I also enjoyed the pre-film advertising. Obviously, it’s a PG film, mainly for kids but also for adults who a) have kids or b) have trained, evolved and battled Pokémon before. So the pre-film adverts cover this in two ways: adverts for toys and adverts for cars.

I mean, the team behind Detective Pikachu managed to not fuck up not just Pikachu but all the other Pokémon as well…

I really enjoyed the film. I have played the game on which the film is based. In fact, my 2DS is charging right now so I can play it some more to be honest, because I’ve barely scratched the surface and it’s been something I’d wanted to play ever since it was even mentioned as a thing. I mean, who doesn’t love Pikachu? Exactly, only people who are dead inside.

And a Pikachu who is a detective? Even the dead inside people would come round to that one…

I liked it. A lot. There was a fair chunk of fan service on the Pokémon front, that’s to be sure. And a dip into the hideous lore that exists by focusing on Cubone and its need to wear its dead relative’s skull as a hat. I can’t wait for the next film – can we do the ones that eat the souls of small children. They give me the willies. Or those tree ones that absorb people. Or…

There are a lot of bat-shit crazy Pokémon backstories.

The film was nice though. It was funny. It had lots of Pokémon in it. And it had the aipoms being arseholes near the beginning which is, genuinely, probably the only bit of the game I remember. I mean, they’re arseholes in a different way in the movie and the game. But they are arseholes. And that’s the main thing.

I’m glad we went to see it. I’m glad Carole agreed to see it, not knowing a Spearow from a Digglet, or an Oddish from a Metapod. I was worried she didn’t like it that much at the start. That we were losing her. I think, though, before the addition of Ryan Renolds in his best Pikachu suit it is just tickling all the nerd bones and if you don’t know the dread of a rocking Poke-ball post-capture then it’s not going to resonate as well.

He just went straight for the capture. Everyone knows you need to knock the health down into the red as much as possible…

Rookie move, kid.
