Jul 19, 2020: Post-Lockdown

Do you remember, in a pre-Covid world, when we used to get up in arms about prisoners who were given televisions and PlayStations in the cells? We used to complain and rant and rave about how they were living the life of luxury in there and how it was hardly any sort of punishment and how nice it must be to be locked up with that stuff…

And yet for the past three or four months, all I’ve seen is people saying how much they’re struggling being “locked in” – in their own houses, with access to their own gardens whenever they wanted, things (albeit limited because fuck those guys who bought all the flour) available from supermarkets, and many, many mod cons. These people have gone mad.

They’ve been up the walls because they were confined to a house, and its surrounds (with their one government sanctioned jaunt). That they had the television, games consoles, the outside, numerous streaming services, books, games and whatever else. And yet it’s been a hellish ordeal (because they couldn’t go to the pub or watch football, mainly).

And in a lot of cases, judging by things like the whole swarming of the beaches and the current trend for booking restaurant slots and not bothering to turn up or inform the venue that you’re not going to turn up… we don’t seem to be able to function properly in society anymore…

Be fun to see how this all unfolds over the next few months…
